Atkins Sugar Atkins Sweeteners FAQ - Sugar, Natural Sweeteners and Artificial Sweeteners

Everyone on Atkins Diet should avoid empty carbs in the form of sugar included in most processed foods. If you still crave sweets consider a sugar substitute.  Be aware that sugar substitute are not created equal.

Moderate use of artificial sweeteners are usually acceptable. Avoid natural sweeteners which cause a rapid increase in blood sugar levels.

Atkins Sugar FAQ

  1. Why avoid sugar on Atkins Diet?

    Sugar has no nutritional value.  It is an empty carb that rapidly increase the body's production of insulin leading to excessive weight gain.

  2. Does starting Atkins makes you crave sweet?

    Doing atkins does not make you crave sweet.  Atkins actually breaks addiction to sugar by eliminating sugar from the diet.

  3. Does Atkins cause withdrawal symptoms from not eating sugar?

    During atkins induction phase a small percentage of atkins dieters experience withdrawal symptoms such as headaches, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, muscle cramps or irritability.  The atkins withdrawal symptoms should disappear within four to five days.

     

  4. What kind of artificial sweeteners to use? 

    Use artificial sweeteners that are safe and does not interfere with weight loss.  Sucralose and saccharin are examples of non-caloric artificial sweeteners.

  5. What type of artificial sweeteners to use in baking and cooking?

    To avoid a bitter taste in finished product switch to a heat prove sweetener which does not lose its sweetness when heated.  Sucralose is a heat prove non-caloric artificial sweetener.

  6. How much sugar substitute to used in beverages, baking and cooking?

    Generally one packet of any sugar substitute has the sweetness of two teaspoon of sugar.  Used artificial sweeteners moderately in decaf tea, coffee and in baking and cooking.

  7. What is sucralose?

    Sucralose is an artificial sweetener made from sugar that taste 600 times as sweet as sugar.  Sucralose contains less than 1 gram of carbs and it is non-caloric ie it provides zero calories per gram.  It does not loss it sweetness when heated and can be used in baking and cooking.

  8. What to look for in food labels for sugar?

    Look at carbohydrate carb count. It is not sufficient to look at food labels  which state sugarless, sugar free or no sugar added.
