Dietary fiber found in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts and seeds forms an important part of our diet.  A high fiber diet  improves the health of the bowel, lowers cholesterol levels and reduces the risk of many diseases such as diabetes and colon cancer.

High fiber food does not interferes with weight loss as it promotes feeling of fullness, has a negligible impact on blood sugar level and helps relieve constipation.

Added benefits of consuming fiber on Atkins Diet is that you don't have to include carbs in fiber in the total carbohydrate count.

 

Atkins Fruits, Atkins Fiber and Atkins Net Carbs FAQ - Fiber and High Fiber Food

  1. What is the daily minimum recommended intake of fiber?

    US Department of Agriculture recommends a daily fiber intake of between 20 to 25 grams.

  2. Does Atkins Induction Phase meal plan provide enough dietary fiber?

    Atkins Induction Phase meal plan does not provide for sufficient dietary fiber as it limits consumption of total carbohydrate to 20 grams daily.

    Fiber requirements will be meet on latter phases of atkins once more vegetables, berries, nuts and seeds are added back into the diet.

  3. How can I get adequate fiber while on Atkins? 

    Take fiber supplements to meet the fiber requirements during the Atkins Induction Phase.  A tablespoon of wheat bran, psyllium husks or ground flaxseed taken with plenty of water should be sufficient.

  4. Can I eat fruits while doing Atkins?

    Avoid fruits completely while on Atkins Induction Phase.

  5. Which phase of atkins are fruits allowed to be reintroduce?

    Low carbohydrate fruits such as berries are allowed on Atkins ongoing weight loss phase as long as it does not interferes with weight loss.

    Low glycemic fruits such as plums, apples, cherries and kiwis are allowed on Atkins pre-maintenance phase in moderate amounts.

  6. How many servings of fruits can I have in a day?

    Limit fruits servings to one or two a day. Try higher glycemic fruits such as pears, mangos, melons and pineapple only if it does not interferes with weight loss.

  7. How do I calculate atkins net carb?

    Atkins Net Carb is calculated by deducting  number of grams of fiber from the total carbohydrate grams.
